Request for Proposal (RFP): Documentary Filmmaker / Media Production Team

Christiansburg Institute, Inc. (CI, Inc.), in partnership with More than a Fraction Foundation and Historic Smithfield, seeks an experienced documentary filmmaker or media production team to produce a short-form documentary. This project will explore the rich and often-overlooked revolutionary history of Montgomery County, Virginia, with a specific focus on African American heritage and the enduring impact of the Christiansburg Industrial Institute (CII). CII was the first high school in Southwest Virginia established to educate formerly enslaved individuals and operated under the guidance of Booker T. Washington.

Together, we aim to create a compelling, community-informed visual story that connects local narratives to broader movements across Virginia and the United States, from colonization and Indigenous resistance to the transatlantic slave trade, Emancipation, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights era. This grant funded work is part of a broader initiative to align with VA250, Virginia's commemoration of 250 years of American independence, and to strengthen the sustainability and visibility of our region’s cultural institutions.
