Christiansburg Institute, Inc. is proud to introduce a new educational program: a community book club designed to bring people together through shared reading, thoughtful discussion, and collaborative learning.  At a time when certain texts - particularly those that critically examine race and African American experiences in American history - are labeled as divisive, we aim to shift the narrative by embracing literature as a powerful tool for community organizing and educational empowerment.

Book of the Month

Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur

A powerful memoir that traces Shakur’s journey from her childhood experiences with racism to her political awakening during the civil rights era. As she becomes involved in movements for Black liberation, including the Black Panther Party, the book explores the social and political tensions of the 1960s and 1970s through her personal story. Blending reflection, storytelling, and political commentary, Shakur describes her activism, the challenges she faced as a Black woman in America, and the legal battles that followed a dramatic confrontation with police. Both intimate and thought-provoking, the memoir invites readers to examine issues of justice, resistance, and identity

Affirmations of Learning:

Our Affirmations of Learning reflect the values that guide how we approach education, dialogue, and community engagement. We believe learning is a collective and lifelong process grounded in curiosity, respect, and the courage to engage with complex histories. We affirm that diverse perspectives deepen understanding, that honest conversations about the past strengthen our communities, and that knowledge should empower individuals to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute to a more just and informed society. Through these affirmations, we commit to creating learning spaces that are inclusive, reflective, and grounded in truth.

Courage
is the willingness to engage openly and honestly with complex and sometimes difficult histories, ideas, and perspectives. It means approaching learning with integrity - being willing to question assumptions, listen to experiences different from our own, and participate in conversations that may challenge us.

Curiosity is the openness and desire to learn, explore, and ask meaningful questions about the world and our shared past. Curiosity invites learners to look beyond assumptions, examine evidence, and remain open to discovery. By nurturing curiosity, we encourage thoughtful inquiry, continuous learning, and a deeper appreciation for the diverse stories and histories that shape our communities.

Respect is the recognition of the dignity, experiences, and perspectives of others. It means approaching dialogue and learning with humility, listening carefully, and valuing the diverse voices that shape our shared understanding. Respect calls us to engage thoughtfully with histories, communities, and ideas, even when they challenge our own views, while honoring the humanity and contributions of all people.
