This hoodie, “PLAYFUL”, celebrates and uplifts the radical act of joy in the African American community. African Americans have faced and continue to face unjust systems of this world. It is important for all of us to remember to take time for deep expressions of joy and celebrate life.

The image on this tee is a digitalized black and white historic photograph that shows CII students acting out a scene in their drama class. This image is from the Viola Charlton Collection (1944-1997) which is credited on the right sleeve. The original photo is at the Christiansburg Institute Museum & Archives (CIMA).

Research and Education Organizer

Position Overview (apply below):
We are seeking a Part-Time Researcher and Education Organizer to join our team. This role involves conducting historical, cultural, and community-based research, assisting with the development of educational programming and materials, and supporting community outreach and organizing efforts. The position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct historical, cultural, and community-based research that aligns with the organization's mission.

  • Assist in developing educational programming and materials that engage diverse audiences.

  • Support community outreach initiatives and assist with organizing community events and activities.

  • Participate in relevant meetings, events, and planning sessions to ensure successful project execution.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, education, African American studies, sociology, public humanities, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in community-based research, public education, organizing, or program development.

  • Strong skills in research methodology, data collection, analysis, and community storytelling.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering educational programs, workshops, or curriculum for diverse audiences.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas for public audiences.

  • Passion for public history, community empowerment, and inclusive education.

Employment Classification:

  • This is a part-time, non-exempt position, requiring 20 hours per week.

Compensation:

  • Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour

Work Environment & Schedule:

  • Office or Remote: Employee may work from the office or remotely, based on the supervisor’s needs and directives.

  • End Date: Employment is anticipated to end on August 30th, 2025, unless extended.
