Marshall Family photograph

$2,000.00

The Marshall Family Photograph, taken circa 1905, offers a rare glimpse into the life of Charles Marshall and his family, representing the legacy of a man who dedicated himself to the success of the Christiansburg Industrial Institute (CII). Appointed as principal by Booker T. Washington, Marshall led CII through its formative years, overcoming tremendous challenges to establish it as a beacon of education and opportunity. This photograph, though fragile and in poor condition, is a vital piece of that legacy. Currently glued into a frame with cracked glass, it urgently requires conservation to ensure its safe preservation.

Marshall’s tenure was marked by sacrifices. Early on, CII struggled with limited resources and community resistance, causing enrollment to drop sharply. Determined to see the school succeed, Marshall and his fellow teachers went without pay to redirect funds into school operations. Over time, their dedication transformed the school into a thriving institution, empowering students and the broader community through education and outreach.

In 1906, Marshall’s life was tragically cut short by acute appendicitis. Denied local medical care due to racial discrimination, he passed away before a doctor traveling from Roanoke could reach him. He was laid to rest on CII’s grounds, honoring his lifelong commitment.

By sponsoring the preservation of the Marshall Family Photograph, you honor Marshall’s enduring impact. The photograph needs to be removed from its current frame, cleaned, and reframed to ensure its long-term preservation. Your support funds crucial conservation efforts, allowing future generations to connect with this inspiring legacy of resilience and dedication.
